Permanent Residence by Origin in Bulgaria
January 7, 2020
Permanent residence in Bulgaria by origin provides foreign citizens with Bulgarian roots with the opportunity to settle in the country with no time limit.
Foreign nationals permanently residing in the Republic of Bulgaria have different options, such as leaving the country and returning to it without the need for a visa, directly starting work in Bulgaria without the need for additional permits. Or easily opening a bank account, reuniting here in Bulgaria with their family members under facilitated conditions, etc.
Pursuant to Article 25, Paragraph 1, item 1 of the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria, foreign nationals of Bulgarian origin may obtain permanent residence. Foreign nationals having Bulgarian roots (i.e., their ascendants are Bulgarian citizens) can obtain an official document to that effect. This is a certificate of Bulgarian origin, which is issued by the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
Based
on that document, foreign citizens may apply for Bulgarian citizenship by
origin. If for some reason, however, the person does not meet any of the
requirements for obtaining Bulgarian citizenship, or if he/she simply does not
wish to apply for Bulgarian citizenship at the relevant time – then the option
is to obtain a permanent residence permit on the grounds of Bulgarian origin.
In order to obtain a permanent residence permit on the basis of a duly established Bulgarian origin (Bulgarian roots), the foreign citizen should first submit documents to certify his/her origin to the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
NEXT STEP WHEN APPLYING FOR RESIDENCE IN BULGARIA
The
next step is for the foreign national to apply for a long-stay (D) visa. The
application for the issuance of that type of visa shall be submitted to the
Bulgarian diplomatic mission in the country of residence of the foreign
national. If there is no such diplomatic mission in the country concerned, the
application shall be submitted to the nearest diplomatic mission (embassy or
consulate).
Once the foreign citizen enters the country, the application for a permanent residence permit on the basis of Bulgarian origin must be submitted. And no later than two months before the expiry of the D visa provided to the foreign national.
All requirements to a foreign citizen wishing to obtain a permanent residence in Bulgaria on the basis of his/her Bulgarian origin are regulated in the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria. Also in the Rules on the Implementation of the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ordinance on the Conditions and Procedures for Issuing Visas and Establishing a Visa Regime.
